Your Complete Guide to Caring for Curly Hair

If you've got curly hair, you already know it needs special care to look its best. At our salon, we see so many clients struggling with their curls, and we're here to help! This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about caring for your gorgeous curls, from washing to styling and everything in between.

Getting to Know Your Curls

Everyone's curls are different - that's what makes them special! Understanding your curl type helps you choose the right products and techniques. Here's a simple breakdown of what you might see in the mirror:

Wavy Hair

Your hair probably falls in soft, S-shaped waves. It might be quite straight at the roots and get wavier towards the ends. Wavy hair often gets frizzy in humid weather and can look either flat or fluffy depending on how you style it.

Curly Hair

Your hair forms springy, defined curls that range from loose loops to tight corkscrews. You might notice your curls form ringlets when wet but can get fuller and frizzier as they dry. Curly hair needs plenty of moisture to keep its shape and bounce.

Coily Hair

Your hair forms tight coils or zigzags from root to tip. It might shrink up quite a bit when it dries and needs lots of moisture to stay healthy and defined. Coily hair is incredibly versatile but needs extra care to prevent breakage.

Your Daily Hair Care Routine

Washing Your Hair (The Right Way!)

We see lots of clients who are washing their curls too often or too harshly. Here's what works best:

Wash your hair 2-3 times a week - not every day! Daily washing strips away the natural oils your curls need. When you do wash:

  • Use warm (not hot!) water - hot water can make your hair frizzy

  • Massage the shampoo into your scalp gently with your fingertips

  • Don't pile your hair on top of your head - this causes tangles

  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo that we can recommend for your specific curl type

Conditioning (Your Hair's Best Friend)

Conditioning is super important for curly hair. Think of it as giving your curls a drink of water:

  • Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair

  • Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle

  • Leave the conditioner on for at least 3 minutes - perfect time to wash your face or shave!

  • Rinse with cool water to seal in the moisture

Styling Your Curls

Drying Without the Frizz

What you do right after washing makes a huge difference:

  • Never rub your hair with a regular towel - this causes frizz

  • Gently squeeze out water with a microfibre towel or soft t-shirt

  • Apply your styling products while your hair is still very wet

  • If you use a hair dryer, always use a diffuser attachment on medium heat

Products That Work

We can help you choose the right products in the salon, but here's what you need:

  • A gentle, sulphate-free shampoo

  • A moisturising conditioner

  • Leave-in conditioner for extra moisture

  • Styling cream or gel to define your curls

  • A microfibre towel

  • A wide-tooth comb or detangling brush

Protecting Your Curls

Night-time Care

A little evening care goes a long way:

  • Gather your hair loosely on top of your head (we call this the 'pineapple')

  • Use a silk or satin pillowcase - cotton ones can cause frizz

  • If your hair is longer, try loosely braiding it

  • Refresh in the morning with a light mist of water and a tiny bit of leave-in conditioner

Looking After Your Curls Between Salon Visits

  • Get a trim every 8-12 weeks to prevent split ends

  • Deep condition once a week - ask us for product recommendations

  • Avoid touching your hair too much during the day

  • Keep a small spray bottle of water handy for refreshing flat or frizzy spots

Common Curly Hair Problems (And How to Fix Them!)

Dealing with Frizz

Frizz happens when your hair needs moisture. Here's how to tame it:

  • Always apply products to very wet hair

  • Don't touch your curls while they're drying

  • Use a little oil or cream on dry ends

  • Consider using a humidifier in your bedroom during winter

When Your Curls Go Flat

Sometimes curls can lose their bounce. Here's how to perk them up:

  • Refresh with a light mist of water

  • Scrunch your curls upward with a tiny bit of styling product

  • Try clipping your roots while your hair dries for extra volume

  • Book in for a curl refresh appointment if you need help

Seasonal Care

Summer Hair Care

The sun and swimming can be tough on curls:

  • Use a leave-in conditioner with UV protection

  • Wear a swimming cap in chlorinated pools

  • Rinse your hair with fresh water after swimming

  • Consider protective styles like braids for beach days

Winter Hair Care

Cold weather and central heating can dry out your curls:

  • Deep condition more often

  • Use slightly richer products

  • Cover your hair with a silk-lined hat in cold weather

  • Book in for regular moisture treatments at the salon
